When Women Lead the Way

In rural Montellano, Dominican Republic, women have long faced deep gaps in healthcare — delayed cancer detection, limited access to contraception, scarce maternal care, and almost no mental health support. But these weren’t just medical gaps — they were systemic, cultural, and the result of women being left out of decision-making spaces for far too long.

That’s why the team at Health Horizons International Foundation (HHI) launched the Montellano Women’s Health Clinic — not just to deliver care, but to redefine what it means to care for women in all their fullness.

Here, healthcare goes beyond clinic walls:

  • Breast and cervical cancer prevention, including screenings, Pap smears, HPV testing, and seamless referrals.
  • HPV vaccination campaigns, protecting girls in rural areas before risk even begins.
  • Family planning and reproductive health services, with counseling and contraceptive options offered in a safe, stigma-free space.
  • Prenatal and postpartum support, from anemia screening and nutrition counseling to emotional care for new mothers.
  • Mental health services, including group sessions, trauma-informed care, and emotional first aid.
  • Chronic disease management, helping women take charge of their blood pressure, blood sugar, and long-term well-being.

But we didn’t stop there.

Because healthcare without self-care? Not in Montellano.

At our latest clinic event, every woman who participated in the health screenings received free beauty and skincare products — a joyful reminder that taking care of your body includes celebrating your skin, your smile, and your right to feel radiant. From gentle cleansers to hydrating lotions, these gifts were more than cosmetic — they were a statement: you deserve to feel good, inside and out.

At HHI, we believe in beauty from within — a glow that starts with well-being, confidence, and preventive care. Health is beautiful. Resilience is powerful. And rural women deserve both.

Led entirely by a team of women professionals and community health workers, the clinic isn’t just closing gaps — it’s flipping the script. Together, they’ve created a space where women are seen, heard, celebrated, and served with dignity.

Because when women lead healthcare with heart and a little sass, entire communities don’t just heal — they shine.
