There are stories that remind us of the immense power of hope. The story of Kennedy “Kenny” Sánchez is one of them.
He was born on May 8, 1971, in the humble Colonia de Oviedo, Barahona, Dominican Republic. From an early age, he experienced the weight of sacrifice. Life took his father when he was just a child, and his mother, Andrea Sánchez, with endless love, did everything in her power to care for and protect him. At the age of eight, his path led him to Puerto Plata, where a family friend—the owner of Oljivis Car Wash—stepped in as a father figure at a crucial time in his life.
From a young age, Kenny learned to fight. He only completed the first grade, attending night classes at Andrés Brugal School after long workdays. On many occasions, he would sneak away from work just to attend school, driven by a deep desire to learn and rise above his circumstances.
For years, Kenny worked wherever he could—cleaning apartments, caring for the sick—always with a smile, a generous heart, and a tireless work ethic. But his greatest trial came five or six years ago, when darkness quite literally descended upon him: he lost almost all of his vision.
During a storm, everything around him began to spin. He fell to the ground, disoriented, and an inner voice whispered: “Cover your eye.” In that moment, he realized he was losing his sight.
His world faded slowly. Faces, colors, the details of daily life—all disappeared, until 95% of his vision was gone. He could no longer walk alone or even rise from bed without help. Simple, everyday tasks became impossible without someone to guide him.
Yet, even as darkness threatened to take everything, Kenny never let go of his faith. He sought help through the local health system, visiting the Los Alcarrizos clinic every two weeks, hoping for the long-awaited surgery that, due to circumstances beyond his control, never took place. But even in his darkest hours, hope endured.
Then, life opened a new door. A neighbor named Vicky told him about a medical outreach organized by Health Horizons International (HHI) and Casa de la Luz. And so began the miraculous turn in his journey. Referred to Ricardo Limardo Hospital, he was welcomed by a team of volunteer doctors who, alongside the warm smiles of translator Sandra and his beloved “Princess Johanny,” offered him not just surgery—but a new chance at life.
The day of the surgery was an act of pure faith. Kenny arrived completely dependent on others, guided only by hope for a miracle. The next day, his world changed. The colors returned. The faces returned. The light returned.
For the first time in years, Kenny could see again. He could walk unassisted, cook for himself, and gaze at the world with new eyes. But beyond recovering his sight, he regained something far deeper: his freedom.
He regained the confidence to move without fear, the security of independence, and the strength to dream once more. What once were insurmountable walls are now open roads leading toward new possibilities.
Though his family could not walk this journey by his side, God placed kind souls along his path—like the young woman who worked at a lottery stand and provided him with food, support, and encouragement during his most difficult days.
Today, Kenny lives with a heart overflowing with gratitude. His message is a beacon for anyone facing hardship:
“May God light your path, protect you, and send help your way. Good vision is a gift. And with faith, perseverance, and the right support, anything is possible.”
Kenny extends his deepest gratitude to Health Horizons International and the incredible team at Casa de la Luz, whose joint efforts made his surgery possible. He prays that God continues to guide both organizations, bless their hands, and multiply the work they do to transform countless lives through their partnership.
Kenny’s story reminds us that even when life is consumed by darkness, faith can sustain us—until the light returns.
