Reina Margarita Richard, better known as Melania, is a woman with a story full of resilience and creativity. At 61, she’s seen her share of struggles and triumphs. Born in Villa Montellano, a small town in the Dominican Republic, Melania grew up in the El Tamarindo community, where her artistic talents started to shine early on.
Even as a child, she had a gift for creating. Her hands brought life to vibrant paintings and beautiful home decorations, which she sold to neighbors and friends. At 19, her family moved to the El Mango community, and Melania started working at a small hotel in Sosúa. There, she learned the ins and outs of hospitality and how even the smallest details can make a big difference. She also began studying Accounting at university, but life’s demands kept her from finishing her degree. By 2017, she had returned to Montellano.
Life threw its challenges her way, but Melania never stopped creating. Her home was filled with her artwork, and her embroidery was something locals admired and sought after. But her biggest challenge yet was her health. Melania was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis, a condition that made every movement a struggle. The medications she needed to manage it came with their own risks, including damage to her vision.
Her vision worsened over time. A doctor found that she had multiple eye issues, including pterygium in her right eye—a painful growth that blurred her sight. It was a tough moment, but Melania wasn’t ready to give up.
A friend from a course she’d taken at INFOTEP, who also worked as a health promoter with Health Horizons International (HHI), told her about an eye clinic organized by a team of visiting ophthalmologists. The clinic offered surgeries for people with eye problems. Melania decided to take a chance and attend.
The first step was a medical evaluation. The ophthalmologists examined her right eye carefully, explaining the procedure, the risks, and the potential outcomes. Melania listened intently. Despite the uncertainty, she was determined to go through with it.
The surgery was a turning point. With courage and hope, Melania underwent the procedure. When it was over, her vision began to improve, little by little. The discomfort disappeared, and soon she could see clearly again—something she hadn’t experienced in years.
Inspired by her own recovery, Melania encouraged two family members to visit the same clinic. They too received care and benefitted from the expertise of the ophthalmologists.
Melania’s gratitude shines through in her words: “The experience with the team of ophthalmologists that HHI brought was unforgettable. Everyone who cared for us was kind and attentive. I’m so thankful for their work, and I’ll keep recommending them to others!”
Today, Melania sees the world more clearly—not just through her eyes, but with the kind of perspective that comes from overcoming challenges and holding onto hope.
