Caring For The Caregivers

Yudelka María Dorrejo Santos de Balbuena, or Yudi as she’s affectionately called, has a life story filled with hard work, determination, and care for her family and community.

Born in Santiago, her life took a new turn at the age of 14 when she moved to the small community of El Tamarindo in Montellano. There, she began working in a chicken packing plant run by acquaintances. It was a challenging start, but Yudi faced it head-on, showing a resilience that would carry her through many more hurdles in life.

In 1994, Yudi met her husband, and two years later, they were married. Together, they raised four biological children and adopted a fifth. Her children have been her pride and joy, and they’ve gone on to give her the gift of five grandchildren, with two more on the way. Her home is always filled with laughter, love, and the closeness of family.

Life hasn’t always been easy for Yudi. She’s dealt with serious health issues, including neck surgery and the pain of herniated discs, which have at times made daily life difficult. Despite these challenges, Yudi has faced each one with strength and determination.

Her education was another obstacle. Her parents moved frequently, making it hard for her to complete her schooling. But this didn’t hold her back. Her natural drive and curiosity have always helped her find ways to grow and succeed.

Yudi also has a knack for business. Over a decade ago, she followed her passion for sales and opened a small store selling clothing and other items. It’s a business that reflects her entrepreneurial spirit and determination to provide for her family.

Beyond her role as a businesswoman, Yudi discovered a deeper purpose in helping others. In 2010, she joined Health Horizons International (HHI) as a health promoter. With the support of Nicole and Megan, who were leading the organization in the Dominican Republic, Yudi embraced the opportunity to bring better health to her community. She’s participated in many training sessions to expand her knowledge and skills, always eager to make a difference.

One of her most impactful contributions has been in the area of eye care. With training from ophthalmologists, Yudi learned about common eye conditions and treatments. She became a trusted source of advice and support in her community, encouraging people to seek care and understand their options. Her work also benefited her personally—she underwent pterygium surgery, which relieved her eye discomfort, and inspired others to get the help they needed.

Yudi’s involvement with HHI has highlighted the importance of accessible healthcare for underserved communities. Through initiatives like eye clinics, many people have received life-changing care that they otherwise couldn’t afford. Yudi’s efforts have brought real change, showing how dedication and compassion can improve lives.

For Yudi, success is about more than personal accomplishments. It’s about the relationships she’s built, the family she’s nurtured, and the way she’s helped her community grow stronger. Her story is one of resilience, kindness, and the belief that even in the face of challenges, it’s possible to create a positive impact on the people around you.
